What is expository Bible teaching?

Expository Bible teaching involves the exposition, or comprehensive explanation, of the Scripture; that is, expository teaching presents the meaning and intent of a biblical text, providing commentary and examples to make the passage clear and understandable. The word exposition is related to the word expose - the expository Bible teacher's goal is simply to expose the meaning of the Bible, verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book.

  • It is the method least likely to stray from Scripture

  • It gives confidence to the preacher and authorises the sermon

  • It teaches people how to read (and study) their Bibles

  • It meets the need for relevance without letting the clamour for relevance dictate the message.

  • It forces the preacher to handle the tough questions.

  • It allows the preacher to expound systematically the whole counsel of God
